Lex will be facilitating programming for Glenmede’s National Coming Out Day Celebration on October 14th!

Event Description

This program starts with providing participants with foundational information on gender and sexuality, and moves beyond into uniquely incorporating skill building opportunities paired with tangible tools, takeaways, and best practices, for all to proactively reflect on their impact and put our knowledge into action to become effective allies in action in our everyday practices. This program is open to all.

The tools and language covered are built for supporting colleagues and clients alike, and apply just as readily to community and relationships outside of work.

Content Areas Include

  1. Break down of gender by separately addressing

    1. Gender identity, gender expression, and sex designated at birth / affirming sex

    2. Defining gender roles, stereotypes, norms and gender attribution

  2. Break down of sexuality by separately addressing

    1. Attraction (emotional, romantic, and physical) and the LGB+ acronym

  3. Strategies for empowering all to engage in allyship and advocacy to be inclusive and affirming in daily interactions to best support queer, non-binary, and trans people

  4. Strategies on how to respond to anti-LGBTQIA+ behavior, with time to practice

  5. Implement and apply inclusion strategies

  6. How to Support Someone Who Comes Out

Objectives / Goals

  1. Identify and understand the core terms and concepts related to gender and sexuality and how they influence our perception of others and impact our interactions

  2. Understand assumptions, interactions and barriers that uniquely impact the experience of LGBTQIA+ people

  3. Identify gender norms to move past assumptions and act from a place of affirmation

  4. Leave with tangible tools and best practices to utilize as an effective ally in action to queer, non-binary and trans people and/or for self-advocacy

  5. How to Support Someone Who Comes Out — practical language and steps for responding with care in the moment, whether you're a colleague, manager, or friend

  6. Allyship Tools — building an everyday practice of inclusion and affirmation, including:

    1. Pronouns

    2. Inclusive and affirming language

    3. “Call in” versus “call out” approaches to accountability and repair
