Trans and Non-Binary Experiences in the Workplace — A Conversation with Lex Horwitz (Session 1)

Program Goals:

  • Listening to trans narratives; gaining perspective from an out non-binary and trans person and their lived experience

Topics include:

  • Personal journey

  • Being out at work

Questions:

  1. Could you tell us a little more about yourself and your journey?

  2. Have you experienced bias in the workplace? How did it impact your relationship with your workplace/your work?

  3. How has being an athlete influenced your work/life?

  4. Why is it important to be intentional about inclusion in the workplace? 

  5. Can you tell us more about the importance of inclusive language in the workplace?

  6. What else would you like employers to know about workplace inclusion, especially for trans and nonbinary people?

 

Creating Affirming Spaces (Session 2)

Program Goals:

  • Identify and understand the core terms and concepts related to gender.

  • Understand some day-to-day assumptions, interactions, and barriers that impact the experience of non-binary, trans,
    and gender diverse people.

  • Move past assumptions: break down gender roles and stereotypes

  • Critically think about areas of improvement to better support non-binary and trans people

Topics include:

  • Addressing binaries

  • Understanding the difference between gender identity, gender expression, and sex (with their definitions and terminology and examples)

  • Understanding gender as a spectrum

  • What it means to be transgender and cisgender

  • Impact of assumptions: Gender attribution & gender roles and stereotypes: what they are and how to move beyond binary assumptions into a place of inclusion

  • Understanding cisnormativity, cissexism, and cispriviledge

 


 

Application of Best Practices (Session 3)

Program Goals:

  • Identify and understand systems of oppression – transphobia, cisnormativity, and cissexism

  • Understand and identify unique microaggressions experienced by non-binary and trans people

  • Leave with tangible tools and best practices to utilize as an effective ally in action to non-binary and trans people and/or for self-advocacy

  • Sharing experiences and how to utilize advocacy tools to be proactive and/or reactive (scenarios practice)

  • Leave with tangible tools and best practices on how to ensure that everyone is proactively cultivating an inclusive, affirming, and safe environment where all non-binary and trans people are welcomed and thriving

Topics include:

  • Understanding microaggressions that uniquely impact non-binary and transgender individuals

  • How to respond to anti-LGBTQ+ behavior

  • Application in practice:

    • Inclusive language and pronouns

    • Forms, signage and visible support

    • Inclusive code of conduct
